U.S. Government Resources For Small Business
U.S. Government resources and assistance are available to small businesses around the country, primarily through the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). There are also many other websites with more specific information, and I will include the most important ones on this page as they may be requested.
SCORE office near you. Click here and then fill in your zip code to find your nearest SCORE office.
SBA. You can find your SBA District Office the same way through this website.
Employer Identification Number (EIN). This is something that almost all new businesses will need to have to do business in the U.S. They are simple to get and replace using your own Social Security Number in most instances. Your number can be obtained online, or by phone (toll free) at 800-829-4933…International applicants at 215-516-6999 (not toll free). You can also fax or mail your application on Form SS-4 to the IRS Service Center in your state. To apply online, click here.
NAICS (North American Industry Classification System). This list replaces the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. I screened this list and discuss it in the Small Business Ideas report. You can download an official pdf copy of this list here. Or, if you want the complete government hardcopy version (1,400 pages) or CD Rom versions click here. For my screened pdf version of "Business Ideas" taken from this list, click here.
SBA Business Size Standards. Contrary to popular belief, there is no overall government standard for size of a "small business"--it is dependent on what industry you are in. This is important if you ever want a government contract, or certain types of government backed loans. You can download a pdf copy of the SBA Business Size Standards here Further discussion on size standards and SBA loans is available here.
Copyright Office. For those of you who develop original written content, you should investigate the services offered by the government Copyright Office. Click here.
Patent and Trademark Office. For those of you who develop products and concepts that can be patented and/or trademarked, this is where you can get the necessary information for doing that. Click here.
If there are any government resources you think you need and cannot find, please contact me on the Contact Formhere and let me know. I will try to find what you need and post it up on this page as well.
